Water Activities and Sports on Providenciales

Providenciales has a few different types of things to do on land, but most things to do are water related.  Land activities are mostly various sports such as horseback riding or golf. Sights include ruins and natural beauty areas, but there are few tourist attractions apart from the world's only conch farm.

Our Beaches

For those interested in history, Providenciales has a few ruins from the 1800's scattered around the island.  Cheshire Hall is the main area and the only one easily accessible for tourists.  At Sapodilla Bay there are rock carvings left by sailors in the 1800s, but these aren't easily accessible.  Note, however, that all these historic sights are rather insignificant and the average tourist will probably not find them worthwhile.

Snorkeling

See what's swimming around you. Be sure to visit the best snorkeling beaches. Many hotels and guest houses offer free snorkel equipment, so check before renting.

Diving

The geographical layout of Providenciales lends itself perfectly for all types of water activities. The huge Caicos Banks, which extend for miles south of Providenciales and about a mile north, provide calm shallow water that's just the right depth for boating, snorkeling and swimming. Divers can go beyond to the barrier reefs which sink into the abyss.

Fishing

Several taxi operators provide general tours of the island, and there is another off-road style tour that takes visitors to the remote parts of the islands, mostly down rough, unpaved roads.

Boating

Land sports include golf (both a professional 18 course and miniature golf), horseback riding, and tennis.  There are two sports centres with indoor basketball courts, and the National Stadium, which hosted the 2007 CARICOM Games.

Kiteboarding

Kiteboarding is basically windsurfing with a giant kite. Unlike regular windsurfing, you can fly, jump and more. Often kiteboarders can be seen on Grace Bay beach. Local businesses provide lessons for newbies and also rent equipment.

Kayaking

Either self-paced or on an eco-tour, renting a kayak is great fun and highly recommended. Both one and two person models are available, and are low cost fun.
